Melbourne’s DollSquad launch their new album ‘Lethal in Leather’ at the Junkyard, Maitland NSW
‘Lethal in Leather’ was produced By Steve Lucas from X and is out now on DollSquad’s own label - Radio Rocks.
DollSquad is a six piece all female rock band from Melbourne single handedly reviving grrl rock! Originally formed as a four piece in 2004 in an attempt to combine the ‘rock’ sound of bands like The Ramones, DMZ, The Zeros and The Rolling Stones with ‘girl group’ sounds of bands like The Ronettes and the Shangri-Las. The four piece line up toured Europe extensively in 2006, releasing a vinyl 7” on Cherry Bomb records (Belgium) and a long player CD on Teen Sounds (Italy). The new six piece line up has a much tougher rock and punk sound, think ‘The Runaways on steroids’, ‘Suzi Quatro goes punk’ or a ‘1960’s version of The Clash’.
These rock n’ roll ladies are as striking visually as they are musically, sporting beehives, enough fake hair extension to supply Hollywood for a month and wearing the tightest of tight black leather assassin style outfits, it’s a hot and sweaty night when these girls take to the stage. Every DollSquad show entails mic tricks galore, crazy guitar antics, flamboyant drumstick rolls and more. DollSquad shows are a shoe-gazing free zone with audience participation strongly encouraged.
See for yourself why Germany’s Moloko Plus magazine nominated their record “the release of the issue”. London’s Shindig describes them as “competent, catchy and instantly likeable”. Australia’s Inpress Magazine thinks “Joey’s Backseat has the best snotty twang since Ronnie Spector” and Australia’s Beat Magazine claim “DollSquad flaunt Buzzcockian kicks, Shangri-Las vocal shimmers, hot urge and a sassy pride Bikini Kill would kill for”. i94 Bar admits “it’s cool to be retro when you do it your own way”.
DollSquad have appeared in Germany’s Ox magazine, Italy’s Misty Lane, France’s Target Magazine, Spain’s Ansia De Color, Australia’s Lone Gone Loser, Australia’s Filmink, UK’s Scootering among others. The band has even inspired B-grade movie critic John Harrison to create a set of action figures in their likeness!
